The first review meeting of the TwinEU project, held in Brussels, was a pivotal moment to showcase the progress made during the initial 18 months of the initiative. The consortium presented major achievements, including the creation of the reference architecture for a federation of digital twins, the launch of the TwinEU Data Space Connector, and establishing one of the strongest communities among Horizon Europe projects with a rapidly growing follower base. This strong engagement underlines the project’s potential for high impact across Europe.

The session was enriched by thought-provoking questions from the reviewers, ensuring that the eight TwinEU demonstration projects and their use cases are clearly aligned with the project’s objectives and the European Commission’s Digitalisation of the Energy System Action Plan. These demos, spread across Europe, are developing real-world applications of digital twin technology to optimize flexibility, resilience, and efficiency in the energy system.
Highlighting the broader vision, Svetoslav Mihaylov from DG CNECT explained how EU actions are converging towards the development of a Digital Backbone. This backbone will orchestrate energy data flows, leveraging digital twins and energy data spaces to enable more efficient management of supply and demand, while increasing security of supply.

With this strong foundation, the TwinEU project is well positioned to enter the next reporting period, advancing towards its goal of building a robust and interoperable digital twin ecosystem for Europe’s energy transition.
